Description
Inspired by the Roman poet Ovid's Metamorphosis, John Fox has created a haunting narrative of the death of Procris at the hands of her husband. Painted in 1987, this oil on canvas depicts the historical iconography -- the bent hand of Procris, the elongated limbs and mournful dogs -- but has juxtaposed them within an ominous netherworld. John Fox attended McGill University, the École des beaux-arts de Montréal and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, School of Art and Design (1946-1949). In 1952, Fox received a British Council Scholarship to study at the Slade School of Art, University of London, followed by two years of independent work in Florence and Paris. Returning to Montreal, Fox began his career as a painter and teacher at the Saidye Bronfman Centre in the later 1960s and then as a professor in the Painting and Drawing Department at Concordia University in 1970 until his retirement in 1998. Fox’s artwork is held in many private, corporate and public collections including the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Museum London, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the National Gallery of Canada, the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal.
